19:24 At Haphazard

Nothing motivates me more than a friend who is    about to hand in her dissertation. I am not sure the interest deprivation model would fully account for this sudden surge in intrinsic motivation, but I think the mechanics are the same. I want to be in the hand-’in crowd’ too! How does it feel not to have to sit in front of the computer for 9 hours or longer? How does it feel to have good auld German Feierabend?

I cannot remember how it feels hitting the pillows and not having the back of my mind running at 200 mph, dreaming of mind-maps, or waking up with a sudden idea you HAVE to write down right away lest to forget it till dawn. How is it to really sleep and feel rested instead of experiencing sleep as a semi-conscious state of continued thinking about the dissertation? Bliss.

It is by the way quite difficult to write a blog when Nerdfighter shouts pumpkins into my ear. Oh in case you don’t know Nerdfighter check it out:

If the faith of lemmings is not enough to cheer you up a little, John Pinto from Stanford University’s psychology department found why God does not have a PhD:

1)  He had only one major publication.
2)  It was in Hebrew.
3)  It had no references.
4)  It wasn’t published in a referreed journal.
5)  Some even doubt he wrote it by himself.
6)  It may be true that he created the world, but what has he done since then?
7)  His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.
8)  The scientific community has had a hard time replicating his results.
9)  He never applied to the ethics board for permission to use human subjects.
10) When one experiment went awry he tried to cover it up by drowning his
subjects.
11) When subjects didn’t behave as predicted, he deleted them from the sample.
12) Some say he had his son teach the class.
13) He expelled his first two students for learning.
14) He rarely came to class, and he just told students to read the book.
15) Although there were only 10 requirements, most of his students failed his tests.
16) His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountaintop.*

If this still has not helped with your write up frenzy I suggest my friend’s mantra:

perseverance, tenacity, drive, focus…perseverance, tenacity, drive, focus…perseverance, tenacity, drive, focus …

et cetera ad infinitum, vel et cetera ad finem

Or for good measure in today’s rather eclectic post: my Mum started blogging! How amazing is this!? http://antik-frieda.de/wp/ She only speaks German and I had not yet time to translate the posts, but her shop pages are in English too.
